About Potteries People
This is a record of my ancestors who came from the area of North Staffordshire
called "The Potteries".

In the main, they originally lived in the surrounding towns and villages of North
Staffordshire and south Cheshire and were farmers, master wheelwrights,
cabinetmakers, carpenters and innkeepers. There was also a published poet among them,
and strong links with the establishment of Primitive Methodism in the moorlands, the
first camp meeting at Mow Cop in 1807 being held on land belonging to Pointons Farm.
Many Pointons thereafter were staunch Methodists. To counterbalance this if you search
long enough you will find not one, but two murderers !

When the industrial revolution came along they began to drift into the towns
and became employed in the main industries of the area, as potters, coal
miners and iron foundrymen. Some of them looked farther afield and eventually
settled in Australia, America and Canada.

For genealogical purposes I have included a few Pointon families from the area at
present not linked to my tree but as most Pointons originate from the North Staffs
region it is probably only a matter of time before a connection can be made.

This is very much a work in progress and is being added to constantly. If you
have any information to add or corrections to make, then get in touch. Please
be aware that dates of birth have in many cases been taken from census returns
and may not therefore be strictly accurate - I have verified dates as much
as possible but allow for "creativity" on the parts of ancestors. Where a
month and year are given this will be the quarter the birth, marriage or death
has been registered. Likewise any information has been verified to the best of
my ability but bear in mind that I am not infallible - you are advised to check
sources personally.

For copyright reasons I cannot display copies of birth, marriage or death
certificates here, but information on those I have can be viewed on the
BMDshare link on this page.

All photographs not originally in my possession are reproduced by kind permission of
their owners or copyright holders, where necessary. You may copy them for your own
personal records without consent, but please do not republish. Special thanks are due
to my cousin, Alan Pointon, for providing me with photographs of churches, gravestones
and residences from the Staffordshire area. My grateful thanks also to the many
relatives who have generously shared information from their own family trees.

For reasons of privacy I have not included information on persons born after 1911
census in this tree, except for my own direct line, but I have many later details so
if you think you are related and would like more information please feel free to
contact me.

I hope you enjoy the site - Joan Salmon (nee Pointon)
